Free software for students and cost for graduates (freelance), here is the list, what do you think? please add any software you think needs to be added.

While the course will obviously pay for professional software my worry is when they graduate will they be able to afford the prices if they are freelance and just starting off or building there portfolio after a gap year and so on.

The free version of DaVinci Resolve supports up to 4k60. The limitations are mostly around specific features, like noise reduction and object tracking, as well as HDR. It's a great piece of software.

I don't understand the Photoshop bit (and the rest too to an extent). If Adobe decides to not offer a free student version anymore, then isn't it up to the school to provide working licenses to the students (no matter what the cost is) so that they can be trained properly for their future job ?

Of course I understand that money doesn't grow on trees and that someone has to pay somehow. But relying on free or special student offers (or on students to straight up purchase their own software even) and the generosity of software vendors seems somewhat backwards imho.

Now of course the question of how to work from home/outside of the lab remains, so perhaps this is where cheaper alternatives come into play ?

Hi, yes we give them all the software 24/7 and they can use teradici to access it from home. I just to make them aware of all the free options so they can learn them while they are a student as it will help when they graduate, especially if they are Freelance.

FireAlpaca and Medibang Paint are both free and have solid brush engines. The way Medibang handles canvas rotation makes it especially interesting as it doesn't rely on any mouse input, thus not interrupting the work.

I like Modo Indie on Steam.

The Interface and Workflow are the most important part for me.

Polystein Kit and MOP Booleans Kit as Addons.

It has a Unreal Bridge (UE4-5).

Strong for Hard Surface and Kitbashing, less for sculpting but you can use it for smaller parts.
