Job Description
Working closely with the programming and art teams, the technical artist is responsible for developing an optimal graphics production pipeline to support the team's creation process. They make sure to meet any artistic/design expectations, in keeping with performance constraints and production deadlines.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Staying up to date with the latest tools and techniques being used in the video game industry, and identifying which ones can be applied to each project
- Brainstorming and prototyping ideas quickly in collaboration with the other department leads
- Establishing and maintaining an optimized pipeline focused on automation and procedural content development
- Creating tools to improve the artists' workflow, while keeping user experience in mind
- Supporting the artists by documenting tools, creating guidelines and developing best practices
- Working closely with the art team to integrate art content in game engines and creating tools to facilitate the process
- Working closely with the programming team to debug, profile and optimize game content for the target platforms
Qualifications
Required Skills and Attributes:
- Ability to quickly prototype different ideas and features using various tools and techniques
- Solid foundation in programming using Python, C# and other similar scripting languages used in game development
- Experience creating tools for 3ds Max, Houdini, Substance 3D Designer/Painter and other major packages used in game development
- Interest in automation and procedural content development, using tools such as Houdini and Substance 3D
- Experience working with Unity, Unreal or other similar engines, focusing on constraints related to cross-platform productions (console, PC, mobile)
- Good understanding of workflows related to each of the major art disciplines: lighting, rendering, shaders, post-processing, particle systems, animation, UI, and more
- Knowledge of profiling tools like the Unity and Unreal profilers or other standalone graphics debuggers is a plus
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate ideas and processes
- Effective time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines
