[POSITION FILLED] 3d artist required to create 2 stylised character models (updated with concepts)

Hi there!

Jump Punch Kick is an indie team from New Zealand working on a 4 player co-op top down shooter.

We are looking for a talented 3d character artist to model and texture: 1 main player-character model and 1 enemy model for our prototype. We currently use placeholder assets so the aim of this brief is to help us further define the look/direction of our characters as well as test their ‘readability’ from a top-down perspective.

Our desired character art style is stylised; think League of Legends DOTA2, Battle Chasers, Overwatch etc... players will be viewing the characters from a top down perspective much like Brawl Stars or various MOBA's (so less detail would be required than say a 3rd person action game).

The player character will likely be 5-8k tris and the enemy character likely 2-4k tris, preferably with hand-painted textures.

Update: A few applicants have mentioned it's difficult to estimate without reference, so I have posted the concept art.

Player character (Concept #4 "Headgear" is the approved concept)

Enemy concept (Concept #1 "Armoured Scythe" is the approved concept)

Skills required:

  • Excellent 3d character modelling incl. low poly modelling and texturing.
  • Experience building game assets for Unity / Unreal
  • Able to interpret existing concept art
  • Experience in hand-painted stylised characters with STRONG texturing skills
  • Able to advise on some technical aspects of character creation. For e.g. A bit of discussion will be needed around poly-count and shader/texture approach (hand-painted/PBR).
  • Excellent communication skills and self-management. I have a day job and a family, so I’m looking for someone who can take direction, work with minimal supervision and provide updates as needed.
  • Your portfolio should have examples of stylised characters in it.

Bonus points:

  • Experience producing character assets for a commercial product
  • Have worked on a 3d game that is in top-down or overhead perspective

This short-term contract is suited to:

  • An experienced 3d artist, who has time for a bit of work on the side (or is between contracts). The deadline is flexible for the right person.
  • A talented junior who wants to get paid as well as increase their experience
  • Someone who enjoys making stylised character assets.

If this sounds like something you’d like to help on, please send an email to jono [at] jumppunchkick.com with a link to your online portfolio, CV and rate with ‘3d stylised character artist’ in the email subject line.

(Enquiries without portfolios will not be considered).

EDIT: March 27 - the position has now been filled. Thanks to all who took the time to apply.
