Hey there!
Late night thought, I've been working on my next major environment for my portfolio to showcase my increased skills in hard surface work. Previously being Maya taught, I've now fully converted to 3ds and blender as I now know both pretty well and I'm proud to say it's going really well! (might make a progress blog on it here soon haven't decided yet.)
However one thing has bugged me so much in 3DS, and I'm hoping a vet here would be kind enough to help me with this.
Coming from Maya and then Blender the one thing I value a lot is when all is said and done and you're making your lowp or optimizing to match your high, the viewport and the way wireframe overlay are handled and able to be togglable.. Makes the low poly process easy to see and distinguish from your high poly.
In 3DS, the viewport is sometimes a nightmare. I find I can easily get lost when working my lowp to match the highpoly. Xray-Ed or not.. Either or on the low or high.. The fact that like.. The wireframe is just on for everything or off for everything not one object is sort of crappy. Ideally it would be sweet to have the lowp have wireframe overlay on and the rest of the highp wireframe overlay set to off.. To make the process easier to read and match in the viewport.
Is this just me? Anyone else having or had this issue before?
Thanks for your time people!
Cheers

One thing that helps me with retopo is to use Alt-X for "ghost" mode on a specific mesh. It also helps to customize the wireframe color so it's not garish on the highpoly. Lots of ways to adjust this, e.g. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/3ds-max/getting-started/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2022/ENU/3DSMax-Basics/files/GUID-34B5F7BB-EB9B-4506-B69F-E7FFBA7DDE63-htm.html?us_oa=akn-us&us_si=373906e9-560a-4d33-b61f-1fdf3590ebf4&us_st=3ds%20Max%20wireframe%20display
This is just an example. This is a nightmare to see through and optimize in some case cause differentiating between what is what.. Is just nuts cause all I ever can get is two wireframes. I'd like ideally just my lowp to be wireframed and then go from there.
You should also check out the recently added Retopology Tools, it's really nice.

@Eric Chadwick Yeah I've been using the retopo tools as well they're pretty good! I'll have to toy with it a bit and see what I can't cook up. and yeah the ghost mode is what I've been using (been referring to it as xraying :S)
I figured I'm sort of just stuck with the way it is unfortunately. I've been using 3ds and or blender in conjunction for this project. So, maybe I'll just end up finishing it in Blender. We shall see. Maybe I can get by with the retopo tools, and touch it up from there.
Thanks Eric!
