I see constant suggestions to upgrade to w11. Should I? Blender, Adobe and Autodesk soft work ok on it ? Wacom drivers?

Just wonder. My previous experience tells never upgrade Windows till one year passed at least and I still regret I killed Windows 7 on my pc. The best OS I ever worked with.

Im on a new workstation and using win10 but if i had to choose a new intel CPU i would have gone with win11.

If you take brand new hardware go with win11.

No , I have a few years old ryzen 3900X, the 12 cores one . Am I at risk of something not working right after the upgrade? Does it have any extra multi-core optimization?

This Windows thing is one of those things for me again. Win 10 was released initially in July 2015, but the first time I switched to it, and started using it from Win 7 was only in March 2019, with a brand enw PC build. So, I kept using Win 7 for 4+ more years.

I'm planning to use Windows 10 as long as Microsoft is going to support it with security updates etc. I have no interest or plans to switch to Windows 11 any time soon. I don't have the time or energy to wonder how all my softwares and games are going be compatible with it. Windows 10 is perfectly fine.

as i understand it there's no significant benefits unless you're using a 12th gen intel cpu or perhaps some other fancy new components

My machine is a year old so no benefit for me in updating yet. I'll probably hold off for a year or so til they've got a bunch of stability fixes in

Sometime ago I saw that you can't drag and drop stuff using the taskbar on windows 11, this alone is enough for me not to use it. Don't know if they changed that now

There's currently no good reason to use Win11 unless you're using a CPU with efficiency cores (12th gen Intel), due to the thread scheduler being better at handling that type of architecture.

atm I'm still on WIN7 (Home) as a hobbyist-come-partime freelance, though I'll move over too WIN10/11 once I snag a stable gig or funds for a self-assembled workstation...whatever comes first

I switched. No difference. Everything works same so far. Still no option to get rid of white backgrounds in file managers or text editors except with contrast theme. It's a tad bit less ugly than before but right click menu still not working in contrast theme . Loading and wake up time a tad bit quicker. Feels more like win10 update.

@gnoop What software do you run?

Blender, substances, Photoshop , Affinity Photo , Clarissa fx , reality capture , Octane render.

Noticed one glitch recently . Abobe Bridge find nothing with Ctrl+F in some folders . But I had it before too on w10 at some point. Never figured out why.

Oh, cool, thank you. Sounds close to what I run. I did a quick search and seems people have no issues with Blender/Maya/Max, but official support for some applications won't be until later this year. I don't mind waiting a bit and I am having odd stability issues at the moment (maybe a nice wipe to get things going?).

You can't drag-drop files into program icons to open them in that program any longer. maybe not a deal-breaker, but very annoying. for example, if you want to open an image in photoshop, you have to partly minimize the window so you can drag the file to the photoshop canvas, or move, either photoshop or your file over to another screen if you have any.

I'd say wait until these kind of things are fixed before you switch, I sure wish I had.

Yeah, that is not a deal-breaker for me as I don't personally do it, but I can see how if all the small things that we are used to suddenly break (or were removed), it piles up and makes a lame experience.

In win 10, if you go in to settings > personalisation > colours, then the top option says choose your colour. It has light, dark, custom. Simply pick dark, and all our window backgrounds will go dark. :)

Not my experience. 😏 Some things will go dark yes, some others remain blindingly white (w10). Even the file-copy window in explorer stays white for me. Or display the status line in explorer (somewhere hidden within the settings) - mine shows up white.

It's amazing how they can't even get a dark mode right. Overall the least flexible OS GUI with the worst defaults around. And the most horrid system control panel/settings app/whatever they call all that junk these days. And that's the one we have to use ... *grumble.

That dark theme in both Windows and MAc are both totally unusable . What a weird solution really. I need something gray like Blender , not pitch black

That, too. Apparently when you have to squint at the monitor, that's considered ergonomic these days.

I dunno.. I don't have a contrast theme on, and I have that Colour set to dark. All my file explorer windows are black/near black in the background.

Yes, backgrounds. But settings windows, file transfer popups and all that? In my case even the scrollbars are some other, brighter shade. I looked into what could be done to at least unify it all a little and it seems to differ from one Windows build to the next, too. So whatever registry tweak is being passed around to fix a particular thing - you can roll the dice to see if it even does anything anymore.

Apparently Aero themes can still be used at least up to and including W10 with a patcher. Those can look great but they already had me running screaming in Windows 7 when my virus scanner thought it had found trojans in them. And making them yourself seems like a daunting task.

Then there's Windowblinds. Some software from the dark ages ;) Apparently still a viable option, and maybe now our only hope.

Scroll bars definitely don't change afaik. I'm not 100% on file transfer windows. The settings window for me however, is indeed dark. The old windows 7 style control panel window does have a white background for some reason, but I can live with that.

I think I'll be a bit peeved if I can't at the very least replicate the kind of colour scheme I have on win 10 in win 11. I would have expected it would have been similar.
