Hey, in 3dsmax there the amazing "Peel Mode" where I can pin verts and pull and push the UV's to get straight results really quickly. Wondering if theres a Maya equivalent?
Yes! I'd love to know about this also.... it seems like a hassle to have to run 3ds for the peel mode and then export and reimport into maya to do the rest. is there not simple way to straighten uvs like this in Maya??

If you've got both available it's usually quicker to perform the peels in max and the rest of the work in Maya though

Have you tried "straighten UVs"? It's in the UV toolkit under "unfold"
What you can also try is 'Unfold' but with the UVs you don't want to move unselected. Or you can pin certain UVs

You can also just push and pull UV's around with soft selection turned on.
I strongly suggest you thoroughly look through the options in the UV toolkit. As there are many tools in it that will speed up UV mapping in maya.
