Portfolio Review / Junior

Hello everyone! First time posting on Polycount :)

I'm a Game Art student that had the luck to work for a while as a Lighting Artist for Animation and after this small experience, I wanted to go back on track and try to enter the game industry as a Junior Environment Artist, as a general 3d Artist or also for Lighting. However I feel a bit unsure on the quality and consistency of my portfolio at the moment and thinking whether I should remove my first 2 student graduation projects, which are a bit unpolished.

So any feedback is welcome! Just let me know what do you think of it and how could I improve it!

Thank you in advance!

Definitely toss this one, I think. Not super well executed, older, doesn't match the concept well. You mentioned you were already considering it, I would say consider this permission. B)

Christmass 2350 would be a lot better if you went for more stylized style.

In general it feels like you are somewhere in between and stylized. That is okay, but you definitely haven't mastered your unique way of doing things. Here are a couple of pointers.

Pay more attention to your forms. The pirate cabin has weird angles on the beams, I understand they are curved but when I first saw it, it looked like a weird camera lens distortion, or maybe it's both. Some other furniture are curved, but that does not really match with the texturing you chose. This can definitely be improved, but you need to experiment and found that direction by yourself, other people can only tell you what does NOT work.

With the Viking Hut, the way the grass is incorporated on top of the house has a weird angle which suggests that dirt would not accumulate this way. And the big gap underneath, makes up to an over all badshape. Your color values are nice, maybe a bit more contrast to the wood material would make it pop out much better.
Also, why did you blur the first image? It's really annoying when people hide details, it makes me think they try to improve stuff by hiding. The purpose of blurring a part of an image is to have a higher contrast with the detailed mesh up front / mesh in focus.

This is the image you want to be first, and your thumbnail.

What I most liked the most in your portfolio was the hand painted tent, the octopus leg and the chair. I think you have a good eye, you just need to polish your craft and you will be fine :)
