Maya - XGen - Modifying painting masks outside of Maya?

Anyone knows if it's possible to edit painting masks in Maya's XGen, outside of Maya? AFAIK, XGen saves the texture you paint as a tiff in Project>Sourceimages, and converts it to a ptex file stored in Project>Xgen.

I was wondering if I could modify the tiff file in another app, so that when XGen loads it when editing, after saving this it would automatically convert that into the ptex. I tried replacing the tiff file with a new one, and when I edit textures in Maya it flashes for a moment my new texture, but then defaults to the old one. Has anyone made something like this work?
