I wanted to let you know about Species and welcome you to join our mailing list!
Species is a framework for building digital 3d characters. Its distinguishing feature is that this system unifies the processes of modeling and rigging into an incredibly innovative 3d character workflow.
You may have heard of us before. Species was originally a character plugin for Softimage realeased about 10 years ago through Exocortex. After Softimage was discontinued, Species was left in a sort of limbo. But we are back in development with new ideas for an even better toolset!
We're in the early stages of development for this system and we'd love to have you along to see our progress as we rebuild this software from the ground up in Maya.

Cheers!

Beyond the clever refitting of meshes (and a great looking base geo), would you mind talking a bit more about the resulting skeleton and/or rig ? I would assume that for it to be a great timesaver it would need to have a solid way to accept all kinds of motion files (bvh, fbx ...) so that even a small studio or individual can produce great shots without having to create animations from scratch. In other words, does your solution have some sort of built-in retargeting ? Or perhaps it is creating skeletons following a widely accepted standard ?
