concepting 3d hard surface vs modeling by other artists concepts?

hey guys,

when it comes to 3d hard surface modeling, is  it  valuable if  3d artist can execute really good 3d by some others artists concepts or it's more valuable if artist concepts on his own ?

    Most modelers are bad designer. For them its better to use good designs from conceptartists. If you have the skill to design your own its even better. 

    But its not a good idea to model bad designs. Your portfolio wont stand out.
