New to 3D Modelling.

Hi all, and thank you for having me on Polycount.

I love working with 3D in Blender thus far (although I am completely new at it), and I've completed the blenderguru tutorial of donut and coffeecup. Yet, I am suffering when setting up vertices for the creation of my own character design. I mirror, think about shoulder position, hip, torso, head, and I have followed multiple tutorials of how to best create a base mesh to sculpt with using skin modifier or just extruding a sphere imitating my character design sheet, and I still end up with a result I am not happy with or I get demotivated when I sculpt.

Is there any way I can improve my sculpting and acquire backbone knowledge aside from doing it over and over until I get the hang of it? I won't give up but would like to suffer less to enjoy the result.

Sincerely

One of the quickest ways to learn is to try and re-create someone elses work. Just find a character you like and copy it. It can be a full character, or just a part of one (a lot of people start out by learning how to create the face). This makes it very easy to spot mistakes and correct them, while hopefully learning a few things that'll help you out on future projects.

Obviously if you decide to show it off anywhere credit the original artist.

    You received great advice already!

Having a good 3D reference you can rotate around while you work will help you get familiar with volumes Daz3D is a free to use program where you can easily establish a physical type to use as a guide. I think its best to have this on a screen next to your modelling app while you work. The shot below has the textures removed so its easier to see form.

The whole story about getting good is like: good, fast, cheap, you can only have two. I think the trick is to enjoy this whole process, cause usually it takes a bit.
