Product/Industrial Design schools/courses

My oldest wants to attend a Product/Industrial Design school. Right now I am looking for schools in the US, but really not sure what is needed for such a degree. Looking for recommendations of how to find the correct school. and get him on he right path, or is this something that he can hone in a skill while taking general ed at a community college?
