Any tips on how to improove these rocks?

which one of these rocks do you like best? the soft or sharp ones? i'm just blocking them out for now, trying to get a feel how to make the primary shapes correct, but something looks off. any rock experts here xD. any ideas how to make them better before i spend time detailing them?

They look too thick and the way they're stacked seems unusual. Some formations do have a plate-like look, but generally the plates are very thin in those cases and individual sheets don't stick out so haphazardly (there's some lead in/out from surrounding sheets). Are these based on any references?
