We are in late stages of developing our VR game Eye of the Temple (
trailer 1,
trailer 2,
Steam page). We are seeking a character artist who can design and illustrate an adventurer character to be used for key art, cover art, and promotional materials (but not inside the game itself).
Work needed
The overall job will involve multiple milestones and this job posting is about the first milestone.
The first milestone will be to make a lot of rough pencil sketches (with rough coloring when needed to communicate ideas) for different possible designs. This phase will be all about coming up with many ideas and not get attached to specific designs early on. We will then discuss, select and combine ideas in further explorations over a few iterations. Maybe 8 initial sketches and two additional iterations each of 4 sketches. We only need one character design in the end, so most of the sketches will be discarded. It's important that no more effort is put into them than what's needed to communicate designs and ideas.
General context for the character:- Should communicate "adventurer".
- Whip in right hand, lit wooden torch in left. Maybe a hat.
- Despite similarities, should NOT be an Indiana Jones clone.
Intent and color use:- Easily recognizable character; ideally iconic.
- Probably primarily brown/beige/white clothes.
- Striking accent colors can possibly be used for details.
Special constraints:- Should look interesting from behind.
- Gender should be ambiguous if possible.
One challenge will be to make the character iconic. The character will need some (or multiple) unique visual traits that make them stand out. Figuring out what that should be is a key part of this milestone.
Another challenge is to make people be able to project themselves onto the character. This is why the gender should ideally be ambiguous. The angle (seen from behind) + loose clothing can obscure the exact body shape and the face will not be visible from this angle, so hopefully it's doable.
After this milestone, the character will need to be illustrated in more detail and higher quality. That job may or may not go to the same artist.
