Wip barrel [learning process/study]

So i decided to go back to the basics to form a better understanding of the modelling/texturing process

all i have is this so far the tops have no polygons yet


any tips as to how i should proceed  topology wise is appreciated

    I'm guessing you modelled this out of a plane primitive. Why? Thats a retorical question obviously because there are a milion ways to do a thing. So if you want to do it the hard way, fine. You could have used a cylinder or a stretched sphere and delete the top and bottom.
    You should follow a tutorial or more because the internet is full of them and maybe youll find a good one.
    My advice is to model it, save it and start over. Do it a few times in different ways. Try to understand the pros and cons.
    Use a material that is very shiny so that you can spot issues easier.
    Dont bother with topology for now, its importance varies greatly.

    I actually did this from a cylinder/circle

    Thanks for taking an interest in my work the plan is to eventually use this as a starting point for my textures
    If i could master a simple barrel i could transfer that knowledge to any object

    Depends on how many barrels that'll take...

    Besides which, your cage really doesn't look like much effort or thought had gone into generating it, too begin with.

    And indeed learn the fundamentals, not only just the 'How" but more importantly 'Why' a thing is done.
