Possible to recreate this blender tutorial for shaders in Maya?

Hey guys, I've been looking at tutorials and found this neat guide on creating comic book action lines as well as animating it. https://youtu.be/zD8hX-KSq4g?t=1344 Only problem is it's shown in Blender and I'm more comfortable using Maya.  I've tried following the tutorial in Maya and to be honest I'm lost.  Is it possible to recreate this in Maya?

It's possible to do all of this using hypershade. But the process wouldn't look the same and Maya isn't so good about showing the results in real time.
