Can someone explain what a detail color map is? This is the first Im really hearing of them. I know detail normal maps, and I use them often, but Im not sure how a detail color map would even work? Cant seem to find anything using search on polycount, so sorry if its been asked before.

The only thing I can think of is those masks they use on character creation for makeup, freckles, tattoos, etc.

hmm, I first heard of it used on bigger props. characters would make sense too. more curious as to how its used on props though...

It's probably some variant of a layered shader similar to star citizen or doom eternal.

I can't imagine the term being used for anything other than the diffuse channel equivalent of a detail normal map.
Ie.it gets tiled over another map so you get higher perceived texel density - usually using either alpha blending or something roughly equivalent to Photoshop overlay blend mode

I cant seem to wrap my head around how this would work. For example, a rug with a pattern on it - how would a detail color map work for the rug pattern?

    Highly-tiled furry fibers.

Highly-tiled furry fibers, multiplied overtop non-tiled lower-resolution color pattern.

Here's an example with both a color detail texture and a normal map detail texture.

I probably wouldn't use it on a rug.

I'd use detail AO and normals with a cloth specific shader
