What is generally a good habit, parenting or grouping meshes? (In Maya)

I am still, a newbie and I have little knowledge and experience of how this hierarchy system works down the line on a working environment/pipeline. That said, what are the pros/cons of these two methods, are there any, or does it matter at all?

I kinda brushed a bit on learning rigging but one thing I know is parenting is a must in the rigging process, what I am thinking is if I used to group a lot it would cause me problems in the future when doing a full asset project.
