[3DS Max] Whats the suggested workflow for animating with curve editor?

I'm just now learning how to use it and its kind of confusing but I'll get the hang of it. I'm just curious what the "production" workflow is for animating with the curve editor. I would presume that you make the primary motions of an animation manually using controllers and then fine-tune it using the curve editor but I'm learning you can also animate entirely in the curve editor so I'm wondering what the best or most common practice is.
