Zbrush Zspheres all "lumpy"

I have been frustrated with the shape of skins I have been creating recently using zbrush spheres - specifically ropes and such - and I couldn't work out why they were looking so lumpy, then I realized that the spheres are larger than the connectors, which from what I have experienced before / have double checked in videos - is incorrect. (On the left)  They should look like the version on the right.  I am using Zbrush 2020.  Is there a way of "resetting" or playing with settings to make them behave again?  

I am also very aware that the image is pretty hilarious. It was not my intent, but if it brings joy, then so be it.
