EDIT: I updated it, but I hadn't seen I gotten feedback, so I will make a newer version with said feedback(and a metal version). I blended the glowing runes into the wood itself, made them smaller, and changed the colors.

So, as test, I made a "wooden sword" using procedurally/in-engine generated wood(heavily modified Voronoi and Wave textures into colorramp nodes). This was the result. Also, I guess the runes are too big/too overpowering? Maybe I need to work on the lighting a bit.

Reads less like wood and more damascus steel. I would look into using a specific timber reference.
Speaking of damacus steel, I did use a pattern similar to it for this sword, where I took the damascus pattern and blended it into itself like a repeating tile in photoshop and used it for the inner part of the blade as a normal.
