Hello there! This is an 1865 gatling gun that I've been working on. I'd like some feedback on the textures I have so far before I export and render them. Anything I could add or change?. The texturing is being done in Substance painter at 4k.
Yes, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and try to make it look semi-new but as if its seen some combat. Making things look brand new, especially metal, just never seems to look quit right to me.
Looks good but you can push it a bit further. The copper mats have the edge coloring a bit too uniform and a bit too bright. The steel has a bit of too much roughness variation. Im sure that the manufacturing procesess back then were not as good but that seems off. Maybe its the roughness variation scale that is the problem. Also you have a lot of sharp edges where different parts meet up.
@NURBS I *THINK* what Teodar23 means is (from what I see) is on some of the brass parts of the gun assembly have 90 degree edges, or sharp edges. In most cases pieces like this would have some sort of bevel or rounding to them even if its only a very small amount. To me it seems like you tried to mimic this with the textures but the model itself is still sharp.
This is what I mean. See how the reflected light appears as a "line" on curved surfaces when its normal mapped correctly. And the wheel looks like it has 1 smoothing group but no normal map. Or something. If you'd remove other maps and leave the normal you would see it appears as it has an indent.
Your metals look very uniform, you could add some colors to them. Also don't be scared to add some AO in your basecolor and roughness, preferably in form of dust/dirt, it'll make shapes more readable.
At first I was hesitant to add more colors to the bronze but then I noticed there was some more colors in the references I used. Thank you for pointing that out mr. potato. As for the edges on my normal map, I was very confused by what you meant, obscura, but then I went digging around on YouTube for tutorials and now I see what you mean.
