OK to craft 3d character without concept art for the portfolio ?

Hello,
I was wondering how much crafting a 3d character according to some concept art is important for the portfolio ?
I assume that one of the job parts as a 3d character artist is to model some character by provided concept art .
I'm not talking about doing a concept art because i'm not concept artist, i'm just trying to figure out is it ok to have some pieces on the folio without a concept art actually.
Of course, using references is main part of it.
