With the next generation of game consoles on the horizon, what should we expect to see from a 3D tech stand point?
Things we have already seen include
Real-time ray-tracing (RTX)
VR and AR
High refresh display technologies 120hz and higher.
What other technologies could we possibly see if any?
What more can newer hardware do that our current hardware can't do already?
Will cinema quality real-time game play ever become a reality?
Hope to get some insight, thanks!

Also tesselation could be used more widely which may improve the way some objects look.
One day we'll get around to fixing animation...
-no AI or really intensive gameplay running so take it with a grain of salt, but pretty wow
PS: That demo makes me yearn for an old school Tomb Raider game brought into modern times. I'm an actual idiot and thought that's what the actual game in the demo was at first. I miss that crazy sense of exploration from the first games before they turned all actiony. My heart, how it weeps.
Anyway, I gotta say I am quite impressed although skeptical. The GI tech definitely looks legit and visually convincing, no question asked there. We might actually have games looking like actual Cinmatic Trailers/ Feature FIlms quality of light.
Although you can still see it's a real time technology as the Light System needs more bounce before it starts becoming Lifelike.
Disney had made a Raytracing explanation video whenre they explained that to get convincing result, you need like a dozen of bounces before it looks good (on their standard) but I guess for game this is already impressive.
The whole Tris/Polygon Geo is what left me skeptical though. PS4 and even the PS3 could already render billions of tris no problem; what activated my BS radar was when they started pushing the idea of directly importing high density Geo assets.
The idea of importing a scanned mesh or a raw un-optimized Zbrush assets into a game engine and calling it a day seems so far fetched to me that I can hardly believe it lol.
Think of the DICE modelers who spent hours retopologizing and optimized all the scanned rocks in Battlefiled/Battlefront; that means we wont have to do this any more?
Its all hype and shit until you realize that rigged/animated mesh will still have to be scaled down geo wise and retopologized jusr for skinning and actual handling.
Final comment; rock is nice and all but I wished they showed more organic surfaces like Tree Trunks, Grasses, Leaves and Hair.
Im dead tired of seeing foliage and hair made with alpha textured planes. How about we get trees with actual singular leaves?

Beyond that, less obvious screen space effects would be nice, I want SSR dead. But more DLSS 2.0 type upsampling please.
And better/more performant shadows would always be nice.
there are still plenty of things one simply can not scan.

just go into the opposite direction then
