"Chess"


I thought I would try and do my interpretation of chess, but with a fantasy twist.



Black Pieces.


I did the black pieces in Photoshop and used inks for the background.
The designs were supposed to have a chaos or hellish feel.
The hands glow as they use fire magic and I thought it looked a cool juxtaposition against the dark.

White Pieces


I wanted a different feel so went and drew these in pencils.
I also did the background in inks and pencils to give it a similar style.
I left them uncoloured as I quite liked the illustrated feel of the piece.

    "Sci-Fi Cityscape"


    I did a scene with a view from an apartment window high up in a skyscraper (the room is the near ground). This is done in Photoshop and it took a while to paint all the background detail, no photographs or textures were used. I also include some close ups, so you can see the detail.

    Character Designs - "Sci-Fi Adventurers: The Fog"


    I wanted to make a piece with several strong characters as if it was a snapshot of an I.P.  Here, the adventurers are surrounded by a deadly fog, with gaseous skulls and they take a defensive formation. Done in Photoshop with no textures or photographs, I played around with colours I thought looked cool and was able to keep to my favourite art style. The party's light radiates from the girl's special abilities and I spent a lot of time trying to get the lighting interesting, and also on the costume design and weapons.

    Character Design - "Female Character for Book Cover"

    Done as a book cover for an aspiring writer, this is one of the characters from the story.
    I had to make sure she looked and felt like the character in the book.
    I quite like the composition, and I spent a while making the pistol designs.

    Dominance War 4 Entry - "The Shadow & The Technomage".


    This was my entry for Dominance War 4 and I quite like the far out vibe of it. The background was made in Unreal Development Kit with 3D Elements (e.g. the trees, the rocks, and parts of the tower) and then I did a paint-over.

    The shadow has 4 arms and a psychedelic chaos feel, being part machine.
    The Technomage i did as a mutant humanoid snail in an exo-suit with a mace that holds a pixie, another small character.  

    It's pretty far out.

    I made sure the weapons looked cool enough for my tastes.

    I think they canned the project. I have permissions to show these. 
    It was my second paid art gig, and they wanted black and white pieces done exactly to their brief.

    "Concept Art for THON:  Weapon Designs".


    More freelance work. I have permissions to show these. I was asked to design some weapons for a Table Top War Game with 3D printed miniatures called "THON". A computer game is now being developed.  https://www.thonthegame.com/

    The designs needed to read well at small scale. I also designed modular attachments for the weapons. I began each piece as thumbnails, and then took the best ideas into a 3D programme, finally painting over the perspective renders to arrive at the finished concept art. Overall I did some 20+ weapons and post a smaller selection here.

    A lawful and a chaos Knight duel on beast back. One rides a unicorn, the other a Griffin.

    Something different, this was personal work. I thought up a party of children with their grandfather and large clockwork toy (a beast) riding on a flying viking ship. They are getting ambushed by dragon riders.  I drew the elements in pencils and then coloured it in Photoshop,

    A SWAT team gives chase to an android in a back alley in a sci-fi city while a ninja looks on, waiting for his moment. 
    It's quite sketchy and I didn't render the details so much. Done in Photoshop.

    Weapon Design - "MP-50 Submachine Gun"

    Based partly on the MP-5 Submachine Gun, this is a futuristic adaption with a barrel style magazine for the ammunition which holds 50 bullets. This concept was done to try out Google Sketchup for concept art paint-overs. The process was quite quick. 

    Done using Google Sketchup and then Photoshop.

    Fantasy Weapon Design - "Bastard Sword"


    A bastard sword is a broadsword that can be used one or two handed. I did the concept art in pencils.

    I then made a 3D game model at 8K triangles (modelled, sculpted, lo-poly & textured). 
    You can see how the concept art translated to the 3D realm.

    A collection of concept art and illustrations from my first illustrated science fiction novel. The project took 9 months in 2019.
    It is self published as an indie novel on Amazon and is currently available as black and white paperback and ebook.

    The concept art and illustrations were done using pencils and inks, and then were coloured using digital painting.
