How To Design Robots!?

Hello, I would like to start a thread about designing robots. Someone here inspired me with similiar idea about spaceships and I think that many of us could share or learn something new about this topic.

How should I approach designing and modelling such thing?
What are some good workflows etc.?

Must admit my bottom jaw fairly hit the floor when I saw this guy's amazing "Junk Bashed" Mech concept marquette/figurine designs, taking inspiration from artisans such as Kow Yokoyama, Luca Zampriolo, Lincoln Wright and "Titianfall's" Joel Emslie
