Hello fellow Polycounters! So this strikes me as a very simple question I somehow complicated beyond belief. All I wanted was to add in the old noIcon.pic from Softimage as an optional Hypershade 2D Texture list. I recently made the transition over (after around ten yrs of Softimage) and I just wanted easy access to my old noIcon default that I'd used for so many years.
With Softimage there was a core folder I could modify to customize it a bit. However I'm unable to find such a directory in Maya. Am I stuck just loading it as a separate file or is there a way to include it on the 2D Textures list?

But i use the RenderSetup todo somehting similar.
I have saved a checker Shader as preset.
However I think the UV checker texture is actually a procedural shader. So you can't just swap it for a texture.
You can change some of the values for the checker pattern by clicking on the options square next to checker map under the "Textures" menu in the UV editor.
