Your workflow for creating flames for a render?

So I'm using Maya, Zbrush, substance painter and Marmoset in my workflow.  I am trying to create flames for this concept art in 3D space.  I pretty much just want the background and space in between these characters to be fire with a bit of transparency, emissive, and multiple layers.

My initial game plan is to use the alpha blending shader in substance painter on some planes in a flame shape of varying sizes and putting them all over.  Then throwing emissive and color channels for some glow and whatnot.  Should I just create a lot of these and mess with the opacity channel and hope for the best?  Or does anyone have an easier tip or workaround for making this as realistic as possible?
