Blender - Shape Keys and Multi-Res Modifier

First off, total amateur animator/rigger.
The question I have is why exactly can't you apply a multi-res modifier to a mesh with shape keys?
I have a single human mesh on a very simple rig. Currently 5500 tris. I've created a fat shape key using sculpting prior to cutting the mesh apart so that I can make multiple meshes afterwards that will maintain the proper shape (chest pieces that fit the stomach in fat and skinny, etc.)
I'd like to be able to create multiple LODs using the multi-res modifier, as well as adding to the blend shapes at higher poly counts. I just don't understand why the multi-res can't be applied even though shape keys still work with the previews.
