Welcome to the Bi-Monthly Character Art Challenge!
New concepts will be chosen at the start of January
Previous Challenge Thread How it works
- Every new challenge, 3 Character Concepts will be provided
- Pick one concept to work on for the duration of the challenge and post your progress here!
- Complete a 3D game res model of your chosen concept
Guidelines
- Help other artists grow! When you post an update, also leave a critique for someone else. Share knowledge you have learned
- There are no software restrictions; you're welcome to
use as little, or as many different software packages as you like.
- There
are no polygon or texture restrictions, it can be a 3,000 triangle hand
painted model or a 100,000 triangle current gen model. Just make sure
the final result is a game model, not a sculpt!
- You are welcome to cross post on different sites (Artstation, Facebook, Discord etc.) for additional feedback
- Before
starting your character, break down the concept and plan your work
accordingly. Being able to effectively estimate how long it will take to
complete a project is an important skill, especially for freelance
artists.
- Your final presentation should be posed and rendered in any real time engine. (Marmoset, UE4, Unity, etc.)
- Don't
be afraid to ask questions, but don't hesitate to find the answer on
your own - chances are, the answer to your problem has already been
answered within these forums
- If you feel anything should be modified or added to these guidelines, please let me know!

Inquisitor by Ryan Metcalf
How concepts are chosen:- Trying to keep it consistently one male character, one female and one other non-human (robot, creature, humanoid, etc)
- Trying to keep the 3 concepts look like they are part of a theme or could fit in similar universe.
- Concepts
must be full body and clearly drawn. There shouldn't be a lot of
guesswork on what the details or proportions are. Turnarounds are a good
thing to have, but not required
- Concepts shouldn't be too
complex or too simple to allow people to get them done in the time-frame
while also finding something interesting and giving a challenge.
- Must
be able to link back to the original source artist to they can be
properly credited, places like Pinterest can lead to link rot. If I
cannot find the source or original artist, the art will not be used
- If
you are a concept artist and want your concept removed or want to
create a concept for a future challenge please feel free to contact me.
- If you have any suggestions of themes you would like to see in the future, send me a message!

I uploaded a short timelapse of the blockout here:

@renato.medeiros Nice start on Dead One! The top looks great, and I like the features of the face and have an image that may help with the placement and proportions of the face. Really nice lips, keep it up!
Making good progress here. Biggest thing that stands out now is the hand. I have a few ideas on the hands here and on my pinterest boards here Hands: https://www.pinterest.com/donenglandart/anatomy-human/hands/ Female Heads divided by angle: https://www.pinterest.com/donenglandart/face-female/
The head is from my head boards, hands from hand boards.
@jozin
You should probably make your model as close to the concept as possible so that it is easier to judge how well you have done. Frequently the role of a character artist is to solve the problems of representing the concept as closely as possible in the round. It may not be obvious to a potential client that your change was intentional. And in this thread it will be harder to help you if you change things too much.
That being said, I think the changes you have in mind sound fine. The horns don't work in 3D anyways and the upper chest/traps should probably be visible.
I have started a few of these challenges but this is the first I hope to finish. Here is a breakdown and the beginning of the modelling. Any feedback is very welcome.
I dont really ever really do characters, so thought id give the Inquisitor a go. Just quickly trying to work out the shapes at the moment
@BananaManyana, if you allow me. I did a paint over.
I hope helped you.
if its silk the golden part could be interpreted as golden threads and if te main material is leather cheets - what is could be, golden paint/foil?)))
I hope you decide to finish this, that's my favourite stylization and interpretation of it so far.
Posting mine this week, just been sick past few days. Cheers all
Just working on blockout for now, hoping to get the high poly finished this weekend! Crit on forms/proportions welcome.
I'm shortly wrapping this up and sorting the low poly, after some proportion comparison and refining the forms.I wanted to refine the cloth/anatomical details a bit more before finalizing. I still have a lot of practice to work on cloth, torn fabric and hair Cheers all
still lack some muscles
Low poly progress:
Here is the start of the dead One:
With the arm:
Should be finishing up textures today, just posing and composition to do. Cheers
Your Inquisitor is looking great. Looking forward to seeing what you do with him. In fact very nice work so far from all on this challenge.

If it feels too long, you can always go back after trying it out; or perhaps someone else could host mini mid-way character jams or something. Wouldn't hurt to try it
And some place holder hair
The cloth is pretty challenging. This is a difficult pattern and the pose of my char has its hips forward so I had to put in a temporary brace so the cloth would fall properly and still give a hollow back to the figure.
The hair will come from a Blender addon called Hair Tool made by Bartoszstyperek, a thoroughly unbalanced but inspired individual. How the guy has managed to keep up with the Blender software updates and keep making instruction videos, is beyond me. But he does, and the tool is flexible and works. The mesh you see for the placeholder on the head are actually already uved poly ribbons made with the tool.
Once again thanks for the comments and kudos for finishing a handsome piece!
