Usually Maya with properly placed cuts, unfolds the uv shells just right, but when it doesnt, in those cases 3d max can help, depending on what I'm looking for, mostly to straighten the shells, but right now, maya is doing some wierd stuff that I got no idea how to solve. I tryed to cut from each side the are marked on the image, but still, the same exact results, uv wont barely change, 3D Max gets much better results, but still, the conflicting area. Any sujjestions guys?

Also a spline could have made that whole object and given you rock solid UVs to start with.
EDIT: Opps I missed that you're using Maya. Nevermind... I'll leave this here for any 3dsmax user that falls into this thread, which is probably no one, ha!
