This is a question for people who use After Effects.
Pardon me if it's an absolute noobish question (probably is), I'm trying to start an animated graphic novel and I literally picked up after effects like 2 days ago. I hate slow progress and I'm terrible at finding the info I need, that's why I love this site >_>
Okay!! So cutting to the chase, I have this first test image:

(SURPRISE, yes it's a kavinsky graphic novel ,and NO I'm not doing it for money! I just think it's a rad idea >_> Like... with his music dubbed over it)
So I cut the image in 2 parts:

![Image: https://us.v-cdn.net/5021068/uploads/editor/9p/bqnm7iblxuqi.jpg](https://us.v-cdn.net/5021068/uploads/editor/9p/bqnm7iblxuqi.jpg)
I fiddled around in after effects and I figured how the masks work and a bit of scripting for looping animations.
But I still can't figure out how to do this:

I don't want the image to hide everything (because it's the top layer) but at the same time I want to keep the effects visible.
So the question is:
On this top layer, how do I hide the image while keeping all the effects on it visible?
Replies
I have to make a black solid and then put the blend mode to "add".
Is there really no way to just work off an invisible layer?
I tried nullobject but that just makes "everything" under it invisible.
