When doing a first form pass, you'll want to go even simpler to establish the flow of 3d forms across the model. Don't try to detail the head, make the ears a separate piece, etc.
For the body, most of it is mounds of flesh and fur with little delineation. You'll have to exaggerate early on to help you mind see the forms. A quick look at an image of the animal shows this:
That's not even a good breakdown of forms, but it's still useful.
