Help With Specializing?

Hi there! I'm looking to enter the game industry as a 3D artist and I would really appreciate some feedback. Most recently I've been focusing on character art; however, I am considering environment art due to there being more job availability for less experienced artists. I'd really like a job in the industry and I'm not sure I'm wiling to work on portfolio pieces for 5 or so years to get good enough to compete as a character artist, as seems to be the trend with artists interested in starting in character right off the bat.
