Hi All,

I'm planning on learning Substance Alchemist, but I'm not sure If it's something I actually dive into like, designer or painter or if it's more just taking pictures and transforming them into custom textures with some modifications. From the videos I've seen It's a hybrid between Painter and Designer with some other neat features.

My question is, should alchemist made assets be included in a portfolio? Specifically for an Environment Artist?

Thanks in advance!

Unless you're a material artist who specializes in scanning I would say it's wasted space as a piece on the portfolio. If you use scanned textures  and materials to develop a working master shader or something of that nature that would be more portfolio worthy IMO. Having alchemist materials center stage though seems weird, but it all depends on who your tailoring your portfolio for. A company may be looking for a scan processing and material artist of that nature, they may use it their pipeline.

I can see those materials being part of a larger piece but I don't believe, based off my experience, that they would be that valuable on their own. Seeing a cool designer material tells me you at least understand the process of making a material and some of the math behind the procedural aspect and how those things can be used. Alchemist not so much.
