Hiya! I'm starting this sketchbook as a place to put my wips and to get critique and advice. All comments welcome
Just a bit about myself: I've been working in the animation industry as a lighting/shading artist for the past year and a bit, but recently started playing around with real time workflows in my personal projects.
Here's my portfolio so you can see some of my previous work:

Hoping to learn a bit about modular assets in building this.
Created a small ref sheet and decided to take my main references from gothic architecture. I've got a lot more images collected but these are just what i'm thinking about for now.
Never done any modular assets before, so I just spent the evening noodling around in Maya trying to figure out what works. Tried to create a small kit to make the building highlighted in yellow on my ref. Everything is just blocked at the moment.
I'll start blocking out the whole environment next and moving things into Unreal.
Cheers!
Rethought my approach and wanted to block out the modular kit and make a building from it. I'll see how this goes
working on some pieces for the column now
Almost finished with this piece, don't want to obsess over it, so just going to try to finish it and move on to something else.
Need to do some work on the spire now
brought it into zbrush, did some subdividing, dynameshing and some sculpting. Won't go too crazy as I'll leave a lot of detail for substance
Threw it into Unreal to quickly think about the framing and lighting. Very rough, will do some more reference gathering. Thinking about making it a rainy scene but not too sure how difficult that is to do, along with maybe raindrops on the camera lens. Will experiment later, but for now going to go back working on the high poly. I want to get to the texturing stage as fast as I can.
Got all the UVs and baking done, phew. Threw it into substance painter and threw on a smart material I created just to get a base on everything. There's a lot of repeated elements which is why it seems to be missing some things here. Will reassemble it in unreal with blueprints for the final thing (like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGNMntRV4E).
Got all the meshes into unreal, and spent some time assembling the blueprint. Had a little play with the lighting but I'm not satisfied with it yet. I've got to make some tiling textures for the black meshes and then add the spire.
Added in the spire. Still tweaking some of the materials at the moment. I think I'll add some decals to break up areas like the columns and some of the more noticeable tiling parts of the spire. Haven't used decals before so this will be a good learning opportunity.
