I've started too many projects for my portfolio and left them incomplete due to experiencing difficulties, so I figured posting a WIP thread would help motivate me further to finish assets. I love hard surface modeling and simpler objects don't really hold my interest, so I've chosen this karambit since the morphing mechanism provides some challenges. Plus it looks pretty cool.
I started modeling this last week in Blender 2.80 and had some trouble with proportions since all the good refs I've found have the object slightly rotated in both side views. It's not a big deal though and I'm happy if it mostly resembles the object at first glance. I'll use subdivision surfaces and later texture the low poly in Substance Painter using a realistic art style. Also, the closed state on top are instanced objects that I'm using as refs to match proportions while I model the original objects below in the open state. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out and I'd appreciate feedback while I work on it.
