Like all autodesk software its completely out of touch with modern workflow and techniques. You'l be hard pressed to find any game studio using mudbox. Substance is a must have skill if you're interested in doing this

I'm still wasting my time I suppose.

More natural brush feeling and paint layering, lazy mouse and snap paint to curves, decent tools for image projection (it's no Mari however), support for UV tiles (UDIM, but different naming convention) hence basically unlimited texture resolution. Simple interface that doesn't sprawl, less resource hungry, direct layer I/O with Photoshop or compatible apps, direct access to texture files of the project (no exporting, cooking). You can build your own marking menus, too as I recently found out.
Downsides: can't paint multiple channels at once and has no PBR viewport. Since I almost exclusively do skin and hair I can live without these.
Oh and it's pretty lenient with the GPU. IME won't crash because ... slightly wrong driver version. In my dealings with Substance I had a somewhat different user experience. Even froze my Laptop.

If you want to get into texturing, check out all the contenders, see what fits your needs and preferences. Substance, Mudbox, 3D Coat and Mari. Always good to have an overview.

Oh and I do use Substance - a tiny bit - for painting flow maps and am totally out of date with versions newer than 1.7 so perhaps they have improved the things I missed in there.

If you need UDIMs or handpainted style mudbox is still a valid solution. We use it also for fixing textures from Substance.
And mudbox is the only solid tool if you need to sculpt and paint on the same asset with UDIMs.
    It depends on your needs.

But yes Substance is the way to go.
