Substance Plugin for Unity 2019.3 requiring HDRP?

Hi,

been away from Unity and Substances for some time (nearly a year) and tried to get back into this topic these days. Now that you require to download a plugin things seem to have changed a bit. For one it seems that I am not able to utilize the LWRP for previewing imported substances with the current plugin version (2.2.3) in Unity 2019.3. It defaults to the Standard shader and throws some errors (19 "whatever" not found).
Forcing it to the LWRP Lit shader has no effect. Trying the old trick of creating a separate material with the desired LWRP shader and assigning the individual maps to the respective slots of said material works... kind of. Once I leave play mode the material turns black.
Is this thing still THAT experimental? Holy Christmas.

What is the expected setup of Unity and the sbsar to work in harmony nowadays?
