We are currently a 4-person team with just over 50 combined years of game development. With roughly 30 of those combined years being in AAA development, having shipped many well-known titles in director-level roles, we bring a good amount of experience to the project. Personally, I've worked on games for the last 13 years, having shipped 3 Indie and 3 well-known AAA games.

Our project is in early development - we're building a vertical slice and using it to raise funds to grow the team to roughly 8-9 full-time staff. All positions we are currently trying to fill are equity-based, with a conversion to salary once we have funding. We're looking for people who want to claim ownership over our project - both financially and with ideas that help shape the future of the game.

Rough Cut of Gameplay

What you see in the clip above is a snapshot of that vertical slice, but we're not quite at the point where we feel happy with how fun and polished our demo is. Several testers have pointed out that our game feels like they're walking through a picture rather than an interactive environment.

Part of improving upon that feedback is to breathe life into the environment with movement. Small, smooth movements such as trees swaying in the wind, bushes moving when the player walks through them, and gentle smoke stacks coming out of chimneys. Also, small disruptions to the environment when the player performs actions - breaking boxes, for example. If you're up for more ambitious tasks, we also have magical abilities to polish and an entire Titan Souls-style boss to implement.

We're looking for a 2D animator who is passionate about game development and has a soft spot for top-down action-adventure RPG games (bonus points if that soft spot also resides in the SNES/PS1 era).

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years experience working in 2D animation.
  • At least 3 years experience animating characters (humanoid or otherwise).
  • At least 2 years spent on AAA projects. This can be PC, console, mobile, VR, board games, whatever. We're looking for people who can recognize and deliver a high level of polish.
  • A passion for creating unique and compelling gameplay animations centered around fast-paced player actions and RPG-style boss fights.
  • Be an excellent collaborator while also being able to take the lead and work independently.
  • Availability for at least 15 hours per week to work on this project, with the desire to go full-time once funding is secured. This position is unpaid (royalty-based) until funding is secured.

In our experience, a project succeeds when the team behind it shares the same values and strengthens the company culture. We are constantly thinking about what happens later - when we launch, the months after launch, and into the next games we want to make. If the company culture isn't strong, the products won't be either. We're interested in the longer term, and we're interested in making amazing, compelling experiences for our players. We're only interested in people who share these goals.

Our team members have day jobs to pay the bills, but our desire is to break away from those jobs and focus on our own team and projects. We're looking for someone who shares that itch and wants to be part of the foundation of MGS.

Come build an amazing future with us!
