Here is an image of the imported model in Zbrush and how it looks in Maya when I imported it over. The edges are all hard and the rest is smooth. I still don't know why it's coming into Zbrush this way.
The only way you can make it appear smooth is by adding actual topology.
NOT the only way There is an old school hack that's been in ZB from back in the 1.52 days when I first used it. I didn't mention it above because it is VERY hacky and I would never use it. Thought I'd leave it here for trivia if nothing else. The gif is badly compressed, but it is fully smoothed.

Thank you for the tips guys. I found a solution I'm just going to increase the subdivisions in maya before i bring them over to Zbrush. It already looks better.
