Trademarked logos in art work

Hey guys,

Is it acceptable to use trademarked logos in artwork? For example if you were doing a still render of an old billboard and it had Holiday Inn, Motel 6  or Super 8 - would that be an infringement of said copyright? Subsequent question would be would they pursue it. In my case it's just a hobby piece that probably won't get much attention. Still, rather do it right? Best to make up a similar entity?

I think the general attitude is that if you are using the artwork for self promotion its ok. Once you sell it you are breaking the law. If you are doing your own piece why not practice coming up with your own logo. This site is full of artwork that uses fake conglomerate names and logos. Personally I find it great fun to design your own.

Legally? Sometimes. Ethically? I don't think so. It gives them free advertising, which they do not, nor ever will deserve.
