Hello, Just a quick question.....when doing nails, should i separate them as a different subtools from fingers or not ? What is common practice in the industry ?
some keep them seperated others don't some keep them seperated but attached, others have them sperated into individual meshes
the answer as usual is, it depends
if you have short nails which are nicely integrated into the surrounding skin, its probably nice to have them as part of the finger, if you have long fingernails or claws, you better keep them seperate, and if its just to avoid some hassle when baking...

With humans, i prefer to keep them on the same mesh.
But, if you are making a subdivision model for animation or production, nails should be in the same mesh if you don't want surprises with the rigging.
Here's an example with claws. They are on the same mesh.
