Character's head/neck is not connected to its body

Hi, I am rigging a character and I'm currently facing a problem where the character's head/neck is not connected to its body. When I try to rotate its neck, the head and neck are completely separated from its body. I have separate meshes for head and body, and the neck is attached to the head. I feel like I should have combined the face mesh and body mesh before starting to rig, but I've done it this way previously and it worked so I was wondering if there is any way for me to fix this problem without starting all over again. I am using advanced skeleton.

The methods I've tried:
- I tried to paint weight to the bottom of the neck so that the bottom of the head mesh goes deeper into the body mesh. The problem was that because the head mesh was not connected to the body still, the bottom of the neck that had been stretched would stick out of the body whenever I try to rotate it.
- I tried to combine the two meshes, and it didn't work.
- I tried parenting, and it didn't work.

Please let me know if there is a way for me to fix this problem. I really hope that I won't have to restart this...
