Using existing work as concept

Hello everyone!
I've been wanting to work on a new character but from someone elses concept (not yet picked), What is everyone's thoughts on this, and what do you feel is the best practices? Not on ME specifically doing this, but 3D artists using another persons, from here or artstation, concept? As long as credit is given, of course!
