ZBrush Panel Loops - Depth Control?

So I'm new to using panel loops in Zbrush, but I've watched just about every in-depth tutorial that I can find, read the documentation, etc, and I have to ask: Can you really not control the DEPTH of the cut when the panel loop is created? It seems you can control just about everything else EXCEPT how deep a cut you create, which seems a touch silly to me. Am I missing something?

The Thickness slider controls the depth of the panel. The elevation slider determines whether it's positive or negative.

Hmmm. Perhaps I'm just not understanding how this works then. I was under the impression from testing it out that thickness determined either overall size of the cut or how wide it was between panels (looking at the images below it would seem that overall size is the answer). The first screenshot depicts what I'm looking to control, vs. what seems to be happening in the second when I mess with the thickness setting. My main reason for asking is I just wanted to know how I could make the cuts a little less deep, while not making them so very thin.

The bevel slider controls that.

Ok, I think after playing with the thickness and bevel sliders together and seeing how they effect each other, I have a better idea of how to get the results I want in the future.
