Home sick on a saturday and decided to dust off the old modeling skillz, it did not go as planned. I have am autodesk account from work and don't own ZBrush, so Mudbox it is. My problem:

I have a model with some layers and halfway through I realized that I wanted the head on a separate UV tile, so I edited the UV's in modo and exported, then imported. Everything looked good until I stepped up to higher subdivisions and got lots of spikes in the mesh. If I go back to the UV window I can see yellow outlines on random polygons that shouldn't be there. Model and UV's are clean and welded etc, nothing wrong there. I've exported as FBX and OBJ from both Modo and Max, same result. Anyone experienced this? Is there a fix? I really don't want to do the whole new mesh -> transfer details dance as I have a lot of layers that'll probably get screwed up by some other bug if I do that. Help appreciated.

if it just a uv change. you dont have to reimport the model. step down to lowest subdivision. File >Import UV

That's what I did, I was a bit unclear. That importing UV's affect the mesh makes me think this is a proper bug and that I'm screwed.

was there any edits to the mesh itself.
do you have a backup of the model before this happened? If you do what you can try is,
step up to the highest subdiv> export model > import the Newly uved Base mesh> Subdivide back to the highest lvl> import Layer(sculpting)> select the exported mesh> done

now you should have everything back.

I tried that and a few other things I googled, but every time something else went wrong, so I'll leave it for now and take it as a lesson for next time. But thanks for the help.

I still have 2017 installed but have since stopped using it.  I can't believe how long it took to add some features that were requested years ago in Mudbox 2019.

I'm on 2019, but I find it extremely buggy and finicky (if you don't do things in the exact right order, that you can only discover through trial and error, it just breaks everything), but since I've been away a while I don't know if I'm doing things wrong or if it's just autodesk as usual. I'm going to assume the latter until proven wrong.
