Hand painted Dagger

Looking for feedback on this!

I've been wanting to do a hand painted weapon for a long time now. 
I thought this small dagger would be a good start. 

Modeled in Maya, textured in substance painter.

Handpainted in substance painter? Was it really hand painted? or did you use smart materials to give it the hand painted look? either way looks amazing, first time i saw it thought it was straight out of 3dcoat or photoshop.

Looks very faithful to the original, though i still think could use a little bit more contrast.

100% handpainted! No materials. I just didnt feel like using photoshop, I wanted to practice my painting in substance. And heavily considering learning 3D Coat, especially since I'm slowly getting more into handpainting. I guess learning a new program can feel a bit daunting?

Much appreciated! I would like a bit of contrast too, maybe I'll play around in photoshop.

Eh, you have Substance Painter already.  You're fine.  Substance Painter has a more Photoshop like UI then 3Dcoat does.

3Dcoat IS excellent about other tools though.

Are you saying 3dcoat isnt worth looking into?
i just wanna be able to blend haha and i cant really do that in substance

3Dcoat is worth looking into for other tools imo.

What do you mean by blend?  Like Photoshop's opacity driven color blending or something more analog simulatory like Corel Painter?

not opacity per say, but a tool that like blends colors as you paint. Kinda like the water or watercolor brush in paint tool sai
orrrrrr kinda like the blend or smudge tool in photoshop

Tru, Substance lacks that, but is that what you use a LOT to blend colors instead of a soft brush?

Not necessarily, but sometimes I use it to achieve a certain look!

This came out looking crazy good, @Lurcisia! That blue gem really draws the eyes in.

I was thinking of checking out 3DCoat for the same reason, but it looks like you totally pulled it off with Painter. Nice job!

Did you end up using coat or did you stick to substance in the end?

Right now I'm still using Substance and a little Photoshop for all my textures. I still haven't taken the leap to fully handpainted textures, but that and 3DCoat are on my to-do list for sure. I'll need to keep an eye out for some good software sales when they come around. It seems like it could be really fun but it's also a little intimidating.
