Hi!
I have a question
The environment artist have to know how to program? For example, I am learning unreal to mount my maps there, and I had the doubt that if I have to know how to program.

The environment artist is also responsible for putting the collisions to the objects in the game engine, right or not? But they also have to make the character when he reaches a certain point the light comes on, blinks??... anything that makes him interact with the scene

Thanks!

The short answer is every little bit helps and if you really want to push yourself as a tech/environment artist, you should. If you're looking to pursue a more "creative" side to environment art, then the at the very least you should learn how to import assets into the engine, set up lights, and create shaders or simple actions with the material node editor and blueprint system.

I don't think I've ever seen a requirement for an environment artist needing programming knowledge.

Knowledge of the unreal material editor and blueprints might be useful but you could get work without it. From what I understand the scripting side of things would be left up to someone else like a level designer or a gameplay scripter/programmer. Environment artists are just focused on building the visual pieces for the environment and getting it to look nice in the level
