So I recently finished my first legit project for a client. Im trying to figure out if I should put it on my Artstation or not. My goal is to be a modeler and texture artist when I graduate and am currently a sophomore. This project was all low poly and basic shaders, but I don't have a lot on my Artstation. Should I put on there anyways to show that I have already worked on an actual app in the app store as a sophomore or just say on my resume that I did this project? I've attached one of the renders to show the style of what one of the environments looked like. Thank you in advance!

Your portfolio should look like its from a project of a studio/client you want to work for. Who ever is looking for an artist wants to see that he/she can deliver the quality and style they need. Anything else you put in there is probably gonna hurt you if its not on a very high quality level. The main principle is still quality over quantity.

I would not post that in your folio regardless of app.  There is far higher quality low poly art games in mobile and it should at least hit that bar.

No! irrespective of whether there's currently insufficient folio content or that this was part of a third party project. Essentially think of your portfolio as a self marketing forward facing tool advertising those aforementioned skillset too potential employers, so accordingly quality should typically reflect the industry standard or better yet surpass it.

Always keep in mind, your main competition are those already working professionally, not those seeking to do so.

Just say that you did this on your resume. Nowadays, some low-poly art on the iPhone/Android, can look pretty detailed. I can only think of Infinity Blade and some Gameloft games, as an example. Those shaders are fairly simple. I'm sure you can model or make something else that'll showcase your work.

I felt or feel the same way, though. I have some low-poly art stuff that I did for some iPhone games, and most of the shaders look all simple and basic. I forced myself to just take those off or stash them, when I was looking for work way back. Ended up refining some pieces just for the folio.

As long as you are applying to a studio that has the same quality of work, this should work fine.
In that sense you can put it on your artstation since the most you'd want is a studio that looks for work of this quality to see it.
All the same, keep adding to the portfolio and take critique here on polycount.

If you are not actively applying for jobs right now, it may be worthwhile to throw it on arstation just to see what kind of responses it gets. If you get low views on this piece, but get a lot more views on your next work a few months later, that's a sign you're improving. Or at least making something people want to click on. (I don't suggest artstation likes is what you should be going for. If that was the case, just make softcore porn or machine guns. But, anyway, it's a metric you can use.)

Later when you start sending out your resume and artstation link, you can trim out whatever shouldn't be there.
